5 House-Cleaning Hacks That Will Save You Time (and Your Sanity)

I hate spending more time than I have to cleaning up my house. Because of this, I’ve developed a few cleaning hacks over the years to make my household chores pain-free. Whether you’re preparing for spring cleaning or you simply want to save some time, these tips will help you tackle your house-cleaning tasks with ease.

Consolidate Your Cleaning Products

There seems to be a cleaning product for just about every situation these days, but you can go a long way with just a few of them in your arsenal. If I had to pick just one product, it’d be Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Hemp Rose Pure-Castile Soap. When they say 18-in-1, they’re not lying — in fact, they’re being modest, because this stuff has way more than 18 uses. I use it on nearly every surface in my home, and I’ve even used it to take care of box-elder bugs in spring and fall.

Spray and Soak

A good cleaning routine is all about time management. I like to hit all the bathrooms first with a spray-down. Then, I’ll head to the kitchen and get dishes or pans soaking that have stuck-on food and grease. While the cleaning products are working their magic, I’ll tackle other tasks like vacuuming and starting a load of laundry. By the time I’m finished with those, the rooms I first visited will be ready for a quick wipe-down and some final touches. And that’s bathroom-cleaning hack 101.

Establish a “Toss It” Bin

I like to put a laundry basket on the main floor and use it as a central collection site for decluttering. Junk mail, random pieces of fuzz or debris, papers and anything else that needs to go will be tossed in the basket as I make my way around the house. Since I can literally toss things in as I walk by without having to think (or open the trash can), it shaves some serious minutes off my cleaning time. When I’m finished cleaning the rest of the house, I usually have a half-full garbage bag to work with. That’s where I dump the contents of the basket and call it a day.

Create a Cleaning Caddy

If you must have multiple products (I don’t judge), a cleaning caddy is where it’s at. Think of it as a first aid kit for your cleaning supplies. I store mine under the kitchen sink so it’s readily available. It usually has a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, a few sponges, steel wool, window cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, and more. Having everything in one place saves you from having to spend time tracking down all of your essentials. And it’s just easy to carry from room to room.

Stock Up on Citrus

I use the microwave quite a bit in my house, and the quickest way to clean it is with a lemon. Slice it in half and place it in a microwave-safe bowl full of water. Set the microwave to three minutes on high and wait. Be very careful when you open it, as there will be some steam and the water will be hot. The oils from the lemon and the steam will loosen built-up crud inside your microwave and make your cleaning job a breeze.

The Ultimate Spring Cleaning Checklist

Wiping Down With a SpongeSpring is right around the corner! The time has come to finally banish clutter and evict all the dust bunnies that have gathered around the house. Whether you live in a tiny studio, a two-bedroom apartment or a house, there’s no time like the present to clear out the cobwebs with a blast of spring cleaning motivation. Wondering where to start? Tackling your whole home at once may seem like an impossible task, so here’s an easy breakdown of our handy spring cleaning checklist so you can take it one step at a time.

Ready, Set, Go… Make a List!

First up, make your own personalized spring cleaning checklist. When you’re ready to spring clean, get organized by identifying your target problem areas and then make a plan. Take a walk through your house and try to spot problem areas of serious clutter and grimy or dusty corners. Figure out which of the following areas need the most TLC in your home and start there. Make sure you don’t forget to check out notorious problem areas like inside your oven, fridge and shower. Sounds easy enough, right? Once you have your plan of attack figured out, you’re ready to set it into motion! Not everyone has the same spring cleaning list of to-dos, but here are some tips for the most common spring cleaning zones in the house.

Woman Cleaning KitchenBe Brave and Start With the Kitchen

Possibly one of the biggest hurdles to get over when it comes to spring cleaning is the unenviable job awaiting you in the kitchen. With so many surfaces that likely need a thorough wipe down, it’s time to put on the cleaning gloves, turn up the music and get to work. Don’t forget to get those extra icky places like the inside of your oven and under your stovetop. Has the fridge seen cleaner days? The area under the produce bins in the fridge can gather all sorts of liquid and runoff from the upper levels so make that a prime cleaning target for your fridge wipe down. Throw out any expired or spoiled food that is hiding in the fridge or pantry and round up any extra non-perishables that you might want to take to a local food bank. Once you’ve finished cleaning the various nooks and kitchen crannies, sweep the room, give it a quick mopping and move on down the list.

Cue the Horror Music and Clean the Bathroom

It won’t be that bad! Rivaling only the kitchen in terms of yucky grime buildup, giving your bathroom a deep clean is serious business and not for the faint of heart if it hasn’t had a thorough cleaning in a while. But don’t worry, the plan of attack here is similar to the kitchen. So keep those cleaning gloves on and get ready to scrub surfaces and toss away expired or empty goods. Start by clearing off sink, tub and shower surfaces of all your bath and beauty products and wipe the surfaces down, focusing on any cracks and corners where grime or soap residue may have accumulated. Throw away any old razors, empty containers, expired beauty products or medicine and check for nests of hair that may have accumulated around the drains in the sink and tub. After you give the toilet a thorough scrub down with your preferred bowl cleaner and vacuum and mop the floor, you’re ready to move on!

Messy Home OfficeTidy the Office or Desk Area

Whether you have a whole dedicated office, a work corner or even just a desk where all your important papers inevitably pile up, organizing files and papers are a spring cleaning must. With tax season quickly approaching, it’s the perfect time to get your documents and receipts in order by sorting out unfiled piles and tucking them away into the proper folders or filing cabinets. Don’t forget to dust off your computer or laptop and other surfaces. Once you vacuum the floors, it’s time for the next room!

Tackle That Living Room

This one should be pretty easy. Get started in the living room with dusting surfaces and electronics around the room. Don’t forget to vacuum under your couch cushions. It’s amazing how much grit can collect under there. Maybe you’ll even find that spare set of keys or your friend’s wallet that you knew your couch ate months ago! Vacuum the floor, under the furniture and in all the corners to make sure you catch all those hidden dust and hair tumbleweeds. Tidy up any blankets or pillows that are around and head to the bedroom for a nap.

Girl Lying on BedFreshen up the Bedroom

Spring tidying in the bedroom is equal parts clutter clearing, sorting and cleaning. Give all of the surfaces a dusting and vacuum even under the bed and behind any other furniture. Strip the sheets, throw them in the wash and swap out your winter bedding for a lighter spring option. If you rotate your mattress, this is a good time to do it! As you spring clean, don’t forget to tackle your closet or dresser. Spring is a great time to clear out the stuff that’s been hanging around, untouched for months, if not years. Pack up a box of your unworn clothing and shoes and donate them for some instant good karma and a tax deduction.

Check Off Those Last Few Odds and Ends

You’ve almost made it through another year of spring cleaning! Make sure you swap out any lightbulbs that need it and check your smoke detectors to see if they need new batteries. Don’t forget to shake out any carpets and vacuum underneath! Especially if you have pets, you won’t believe how much dirt, dander and fur can get trapped under your rugs, runners and kitchen mats. Once your home smells fresh and looks tidy you can check off every last item on your spring cleaning checklist and get to everyone’s favorite post spring cleaning activity: spring decorating!

12 Kitchen Cleaning Hacks to Save Minutes and Moolah

kitchentips

If cleaning your kitchen always seems like a journey of epic Lord of the Rings proportions, you’re not alone. You may not have a team of men, dwarves and hobbits at your disposal but these mighty kitchen cleaning tips will always have your back. Here are 12 tips for cleaning your kitchen that will not only save you time and effort, but also a little money!

1. 2-Step Oven Cleaner: No need to buy harsh chemicals or use the self-cleaning option on your oven that will make the whole house feel like a sauna. Simply place a bowl with a ½ cup of ammonia in your completely cool oven overnight. Wipe off all the grim easily the next day with a few paper towels. Done!

2. Fight Oil With Oil: The greasy residue that collects on your kitchen backsplash is cooking oil that has collected dust to create a mess that is pretty hard to get rid of. If you’re a fan of natural cleaning products, stock up on mineral oil. Take a cloth with mineral oil and wipe the greasy areas then repeat with a clean cloth. The residue will come off with exactly zero elbow grease.

3. Easy Microwave Cleaner: Microwaves are notoriously hard to clean because they are both tiny and prone to explosive messes. Use another natural remedy to this problem by microwaving a coffee cup of white vinegar for three minutes then wiping the microwave down with a clean, damp cloth.

4. You Already Own Stainless Steel Cleaner: Chances are, you have some WD-40 in your garage but it also works double duty as a stainless steel cleaner. If not, hopefully you have a lemon and some salt in your kitchen. Sprinkle the salt onto your stainless steel sink and scrub with half a lemon. Stains come off instantly and leave a fresh scent. Bonus!

5. 10-Second Blender Cleaning: Spare yourself the hassle of taking apart your blender (and danger of cutting yourself) to clean it. After enjoying your icy beverage or smoothie, fill the blender half way with warm water and just a couple of drops of dish soap. Blend with the lid on for 10 seconds then rinse. That’s all she wrote.

6. Wave Bye Bye to Burnt-On Food: Cleaning burnt pots is perhaps the most infuriating thing ever, especially if they are Teflon-coated and you can easily damage them by abrasive scrubbing. Next time you have a sticky burnt mess on your hands, fill the pot or pan with warm water and throw in a dryer sheet to soak. In just a few minutes, it will be ready to wash and the scorched food will come off with ease.

7. Under The ‘Fridge (Not a Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Remix): Believe it or not, you don’t have to wait until moving day to clean underneath your refrigerator. If you are sensitive to dust, this should be a regular undertaking but it doesn’t have to be a back-breaker. Grab a pair of old pantyhose and roll them onto a broom or mop handle. Swipe underneath the fridge with the “hosed” end to push the dust and food particles out into the open so they can be easily swept up.

8. Freshen Up Your ‘Fridge: Keep the inside of your refrigerator smelling so fresh and so clean but also, you know, safe for food because that’s where your food lives. Take a spray bottle and fill it with two parts water and one part white vinegar with a little bit of lemon oil for a refreshing scent. Empty out the whole shebang, spray with your homemade mix, then wipe it down. It’s a little labor intensive but at least you don’t have to do it every day.

9. Deep Clean Your Cutting Boards: Remember that lemon and salt treatment for your stainless steel sink? Double up the fun and apply it to your wooden cutting boards! Again, this is not something you have to do every day but it’s pretty easy and does not require a fancy, expensive cleaner.

10. Microwave Your Kitchen Washrags: Say what? Yes, washing your washrags always works to keep things sanitary but in between washes (before they get downright dirty with food stains), give them a good microwaving to kill lingering bacteria. Rinse your rags, wring them out, then place them in the microwave for three minutes. Let them sit until cool then hang dry for a clean you can trust without waiting for laundry day.

11. De-Gunk Kitchen Cabinets: You may think you know how to clean kitchen cabinets until you notice the outsides getting dingier and greasier over time. Remember, fight oil with oil. Take soft-bristled toothbrush (that you don’t use) and scrub gently with mineral or vegetable oil to get rid of stubborn residue lightning fast.

12. Clean Your Coffee or Spice Grinder: If you don’t want to mix your coffees or spices, do a quick palette cleanse by adding stale bread or uncooked rice to your grinder and give it a few pulses. This will loosen up all the built-up powders so they will all come out with a good shake into the trash bin.

Clean Up Your Spring Cleaning Routine

Mop and Bucket

It’s that time of year that many of us dread—spring cleaning. It may seem like an arduous task but once you’ve ditched the dirt and cleared out the clutter, you’ll feel like you’ve moved into a brand new home. To help you get started, we’ve got quite a few tips to make the process of spring cleaning go as smoothly as possible.

Front Stoop

De-Dirt the Doormats
Your doormat is what helps prevent outside dirt from coming in, so keeping them clean is important to make sure they continue to do what they were designed to do. Shake them out, give them a wash, or swat them with a broom. If they are really bad, consider replacing them.

paintedwalls

Clean Painted Walls
To clean a painted wall, start with a clean sponge or cloth and water. If there are stubborn stains, mix a little mild dishwashing liquid with the water and dip your cloth or sponge into the mixture. Dry the walls with a clean cloth.

woodenfloors

Protect Wooden Floors
Guard your floor against scratches by using surface protectors on the underside of furniture legs. Replace any if they become dirty or worn. Place saucers under plants to protect against water damage. Use a damp mop with a mild soap once a week to keep your wood floor protected and clean.

windows

Wash Windows
Using a rubber-edged squeegee instead of a cloth or paper towel makes the process of washing dirty panes a breeze. Wet your window with a sponge dipped into a bucket of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Dampen the squeegee and draw it down the pane using overlapping strokes and wiping the rubber edge with the sponge after each stroke. Dry the windowsills with a cloth after you are done.

lightbulbs

Dust Lightbulbs
Unscrew lightbulbs and polish with a microfiber cloth dampened with water. Make sure to avoid wetting the metal screw base when cleaning. If you have recessed lighting, use a telescoping duster to clean.

blindscurtains

Wash Blinds and Curtains
Wipe wooden blinds with a few drops of wood cleaner onto a mostly-dry sponge. For aluminum blinds, take them to the outdoors to be washed. Place on a slanted surface and scrub with water and a non-corrosive cleaner. Rise well with a hose and dry the blinds thoroughly with a towel to prevent rust. Clean your curtains by either vacuuming and steam cleaning or have them dry-cleaned.

carpet

Deep-Clean Carpets and Rugs
Rent (or buy) a shampooer/extractor for synthetic carpeting. This helps clean the fibers and removes the soap traces with hot water. After cleaning, place a small piece of wax paper under each leg to protect your carpet and keep the furniture legs from getting wet while the carpet dries. Open windows to speed up the drying process. For valuable or wool carpets and rugs, call a professional for cleaning.

cleaning the tiled floor with purple mop

Caring For Tile
When cleaning kitchen and bathroom tiles, mixing baking soda and water makes a great homemade that is free of harmful chemicals. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into 2 gallons of water and mix well. Apply the liquid to the tiles with a mop or sponge.

fridge

Clean Out the Refrigerator
This daunting task may be the scariest one on the list, but it is much more manageable to do when broken down into steps. Wipe up any spills immediately to prevent future stains. Throw out old food on a weekly basis. Every few months, wash the interior of the fridge by mixing 2 tablespoons of baking soda into a quart of warm water. Let glass shelves come to room temperature before washing. If there is a hardened stain, loosen it by wetting with the solution before wiping up. Use a toothbrush to scrub the nook and crannies. Twice a year, vacuum or brush dust the condenser coils. Built-up dust can overhead the unit causing it to shut down.

Spring cleaning seems daunting at first, but making a checklist of what needs to be done and assigning rolls over a couple of days makes the process painless and productive. What spring cleaning tip do you use each year?
