In the spring of 2010 Melissa Hinnant was five months pregnant when it was discovered that she was in very premature labor. She was rushed into emergency surgery and while laying horizontal in the hospital she had to do something with her hands and this started and spurred her desire to sew. She lived in the hospital for 2 weeks, before doctors could no longer stop the labor. A very tiny, but oh so perfect baby girl was born, and the Lord took her straight to Heaven. It is out of this great tragedy that an accidental company was born.
Late fall 2011, Melissa listed her first pair of women’s boot socks on Etsy. In a matter of days, overwhelmed with orders that she could not possibly fulfill alone, she convinced her friends to help. Soon a team of friends and family began working out of their homes, busy sewing and shipping. Three years later, Grace and Lace has sold over 300,000 pairs of lacey, frilly boot socks, leg warmers, and women’s apparel. The company has grown so rapidly that they have now evolved into an official company with trademarked designs, a full studio and warehouse, and friends and family as staff.
In August 2013, Grace and Lace announced a partnership with Angel House, an organization that builds self-sustaining orphanages in India. A portion of all the company’s sales are donated to Angel House. Grace and Lace opened two orphanages that house a total of 150 children in the summer of 2014 and plans are in the works to open five more in the next year. They have named the orphanages Halle House in honor of their baby girl who was the inspiration for the company.
